2016 Lake Griffin State Park Native Plant Maintenance Project

The Villages Chapter of FNPS provided 12 volunteers for a 2-hour maintenance project at Lake Griffin State Park on April 12, 2016.  The Park Entrance was planted with native plants about 2 years ago by Green Isle Gardens.  The park depends on volunteers for maintenance, but no one there knew what is native and what to pull.  The group arrived promptly at 8:30 am with hand tools and ready to work.  After a few minutes of coaching on plant identification everyone started weeding.  The Muhly grasses and Elliotts Love Grasses were cut back and the area was mulched with 30 bales of pine straw.

Rachel Nunlist, Park Manager, and Daniel Osborn, Park Services Specialist, provided us with healthy snacks and water.  They were very impressed with how well the group was prepared and extremely appreciative of what we accomplished in only 2 hours.  The before and after pictures tell the story.  What a big difference in the appearance of this high-visibility location!

"Our Chapter wants people to have a positive impression of native plants.", said Steve Turnipseed,  "Now the area looks maintained.  With some summer rains and sunny days, the plants will start to show off their colors and form."

Thanks to all of the participants:
