The Greenway was named for Marjorie Harris Carr, a woman who was instrumental in blocking the completion of the Cross Florida Barge Canal. In May 2016, The Villages' meeting speaker was Peggy McDonald, the author of "Marjorie Harris Carr: Defender of Florida’s Environment". Peggy has personal knowledge about Marjorie Carr. She explained the reasons why Floridans did not want the Cross Barge Canal to be completed. Sumter County and Lake County libraries have this book for loan.
"The Cross Florida Greenway is unique in many ways." It is the area where the barge canal was to be located. It is a 110-mile linear park. There are hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails, and much more.
