Hunting and Fishing

Change to Florida Constitution to Make Hunting the Preferred Management Method for Wildlife Management?

FNPS Position: The most effective tools for managing wildlife are rooted in habitat management.

Do you think the red-cockaded woodpecker or monarch butterfly would benefit from hunting as a management methodology?

In summary, the public’s right to fish and hunt is already protected in statute, and Amendment 2 could increase the disproportionate access to public conservation land already afforded to hunters during hunting season.

FNPS Opposes Amendment 2

Withlacoochee Land Swap

  • Proposed Withlacoochee State Forest golf course land swap.
    from FNPS:
FNPS determined the parcel has substantial conservation value and therefore does not qualify to be declared surplus pursuant to §253.0341(1), F.S.  FNPS also determined the proposed exchange would not result in a net conservation benefit. As such, we recommend FFS immediately suspend any further consideration of the proposal.

  • Bill 781 passed by the 2024 legislature
The new law permits unsolicited proposals for public-private partnerships (PPPs) without a competitive bidding process and appears to offer a streamlined pathway for developers to push through controversial projects in Florida’s state parks, among other places.
